Toxic Relationship Recovery
What is a Toxic Relationship?
There are many ways for a relationship to be harmful. Here are just a few examples:
A parent who is neglectful or emotionally, physically, or sexually abusive
A manipulative or cruel romantic partner
A boss or co-worker who is demeaning, controlling, or coerces you to act against your values
A friendship that causes you to question your sense of self
At its core, a toxic relationship leaves you with a sense of shame and uneasiness. If you are doubting yourself or your ability to feel safe again within a relationship, then you may be suffering from the aftermath of a toxic relationship.
The Effects of a Toxic Relationship
Recovering from a harmful relationship can be so difficult because you may continue to carry forward some of the distorted and unhealthy views of yourself and others that developed within that relationship.
You may be left wondering:
How did I end up here in the first place?
Why did I stay if there was an opportunity to leave?
How will I ever trust myself and or anyone else to keep me safe and secure?
